How to Download and Set Up Grok Bot
Getting Grok Bot set up is the exciting part, because once it's done you have a helper that can take on real jobs for you. This guide goes one small step at a time, for your computer and your phone. There's no rush, and nothing here needs any tech background.
Or press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on a Mac). Printing uses large type and leaves out the menus.
Before You Start
- A plan that includes Grok Bot. Grok Bot is part of the paid Premium, Super, and Ultra plans. The Free and Plus plans don't include it.[7][8] Some older plans include it too. Our guide Which Plans Include Grok Bot? explains it all in plain English.
- Grok Bot has its own app. It's separate from the regular Grok chat app. There are desktop apps for Mac, Windows, and Linux, and phone apps for iPhone and Android.[1][3]
- Your Bots live in the cloud. Your Bots work on their own computer in the cloud, so they keep going even when your laptop is closed.[3] Your Bots and conversations stay in sync between your computer and your phone.[3]
Get Grok Bot on Your Computer
Go to the official page at x.ai/bot and find the download for your computer.[1][4]
On a Mac
- Choose the Apple silicon or Intel download. Not sure which? Open the Apple menu, then About This Mac. If you see "Chip," choose Apple silicon. If you see "Processor," choose Intel.[1]
- Open the file you downloaded.[1]
- Drag Grok Bot into your Applications folder.[1]
- Open Grok Bot. If your Mac asks whether you're sure, choose Open.[1]
On Windows
- Choose the x64 or Arm64 download. To check which one you need, open Settings, then System, then About, and look at System type.[1]
- Run the installer you downloaded.[1]
- Open Grok Bot from the Start menu.[1]
On Linux
Linux versions are under More downloads on x.ai/bot. The official setup guide lists which file to pick for your version of Linux.[1]
Good news: once it's installed, Grok Bot checks for updates by itself. You can also check yourself under Settings, then Updates.[1]
Get Grok Bot on Your Phone
The phone app connects to the same Bots, conversations, and cloud computer as the desktop app, so you can check in, answer questions, and approve steps from your armchair.[2]
- iPhone: needs iOS 18 or later. Get Grok Bot from the App Store. The official listing shows the seller as X Corp.[2][5] It also runs on iPad with iPadOS 18 or later.[2]
- Android: needs Android 9 or later. Get Grok Bot from Google Play. The official listing shows the developer as SpaceXAI.[2][6]
- The app is free to install on both stores, and both listings mention in-app purchases.[5][6] Using Grok Bot still needs an eligible plan.[2]
- Open Grok Bot and choose Sign in (on a phone, Log In or Sign Up).[1][2]
- A web browser window opens. Finish signing in there.[1]
- When the browser says you're signed in, go back to the Grok Bot app.[1]
- If your access comes from a SuperGrok subscription, the app asks you to link it. Follow the steps on the screen.[1]
Good to know: Grok Bot uses a Cursor account to sign in. On The X Subscription, one plan and one bill cover both Grok and Cursor.[1][7] If the app says an account privacy setting needs to change before it can start, that's expected. Grok Bot needs to store your work in the cloud, so the older "Legacy Privacy Mode" setting isn't supported.[1][10]
Make Your First Bot
This is the fun part! The first time you open Grok Bot, it gives you a short tour of Bots, the shared computer, and routines. Then it asks which tools you use. Your answers only shape the suggestions it shows you. They don't connect or change anything.[1]
- On the Meet a future teammate screen, pick a suggested Bot, or choose Create your own.[1]
- Give your Bot a short name, one main job, and a few words about how it should work.[1]
Here's an example in our own words, for a Bot that helps around the house:
The official guide says focused Bots work better than one Bot that does everything. You can add more later with New, then Create new Bot.[1] Need ideas? See Which Grok Bot Job Should You Start With?
Try a Safe First Request
Type in the message box, or choose Start voice input (on a phone, Start dictation) to speak instead.[1] For a first try that doesn't connect to anything or log in anywhere, attach a document and send the official example request:[1]
The official guide calls this a five-minute first result, so soon you'll have your first piece of finished work to look over. If something isn't quite right, just ask the Bot to fix it.[1]
Spotting Fake Downloads
- Start from the official page. Use x.ai/bot for the computer apps.[1]
- Check who made the app. In the App Store the seller should be X Corp., and in Google Play the developer should be SpaceXAI.[5][6]
- Watch out for lookalikes. Our advice: searching an app store for "bot" or "AI chat" turns up lots of apps with similar names. Tap through to the listing and check the name and developer before you install.
- Never buy from a reseller. The official pricing page says subscriptions are sold only directly, with no authorized resellers.[9]
- Nobody official will ask for your password. Our advice: if a message or call asks for your password or a code, stop and go to the official site yourself. We're a fan site, and we will never ask for your login.
